Ushers & Greeters

Duties of ushers and greeters

Ministers of Hospitality do much more than take up the collection and pass out bulletins. It is their responsibility to greet the faithful when they arrive and give them a sense of warmth and hospitality.  The Usher is the first person to meet our members on arrival and very often establishes the attitude of those attending Mass.  A smile, a handshake and a warm greeting can transform the attitude of someone who had a rough morning getting to Mass.  While our duties do ensure that the Mass runs smoothly, we must at all times try to maintain an atmosphere that provides an open invitation to worship.

Requirements

  • active and faithful member of the Church
  • godly character and reputation
  • exhibit respect for others, discretion and appropriate decorum
  • comfortable meeting and greeting others, making them feel welcome and at home

Before Mass

  • arrive at least 25 minutes before Mass
  • be sure you know where to find the First Aid Kit and the locations of the fire extinguishers; know who has a cell phone in case of a 911 emergency.
  • light the candles;  bring hosts and wine to the rear of the Church to the gift table
  • briefly ask the celebrant about any activities or special offerings/services during this Mass
  • appoint a family to take up the gifts in the procession for the Preparation of the Gifts
  • be certain that you have an adequate number of ushers
  • be at the entrance of the Church to greet and welcome the people.  Avoid congregating in one area of the Parish Hall, as well as speaking with fellow ministers to the exclusion of those who are gathering for the liturgy
  • have all visitors fill out the Welcome To Our Parish envelopes (Parish Hall Rostrum –in top rach)
  • assist the elderly and disabled or any who need assistance in getting out of or into their cars in the porte-cochere
  • assist seating any who may need assistance

During Mass

  • collect the offering…give adequate time to deposit gifts during collection  - two ushers for the center aisle and one for each of the side aisles
  • assist those who will be taking up the hosts and wine at the presentation of the offerings
  • during Communion, keep the lines balanced and moving

After Mass

  • distribute the parish bulletin and any other pertinent materials (the Bulletins are on the table in Father’s vesting room)
  • assist any with special needs
  • extinguish the candles that were lighted for this Mass
  • check all pews in the Church, collecting anything that does not belong, and return the Missalettes and hymnbooks to the appropriate pew racks, facing the front cover towards the pew it serves
  • leave the Church well-organized and inviting for the next Mass
  • take time to offer a prayer of thanksgiving for this ministry- our privilege and our obligation
